Acupuncture

Acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing and

improves function; it had been used for thousands of

years in Asian countries. Acupuncture treatments can help the body's

internal organs to correct imbalances in the patients’ digestion,

absorption, and energy production activities.  An energy, Qi, circulates

through the merdians to all of the parts of the body and it's balance is

necessary to keep a healthy body.  An inbalance can lead to pain, or a

worsening in health.

The pracitioner of Traditional Oriental Medicine uses

acupunture to stimulate the meridians and points of the nervous system to

release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. This will influence

the body’s  internal regulating  sytem, which will stimulate the body’s

natural healing powers.  The needles used in Acupuncture are very thin, in some cases

thinner than a hair, so that they fit between the cell wallks.  The needles

are so delicate that most patients cannot feel them.  Acupuncture treats

the cause as well as the symptoms of an illness, allowing the body to begin

to repair itself .

There are two theories in explaining the effectiveness of acupuncture: the

Gate Theory and the Nuero-Endocrine Theory.   In the Gate Theory, thin nerve

fibers transmit the sensation of pain while thick nerve fibers carry the

sensation of touch.  It has been found that if impulses in the thick fibers

are increased, conductions in the thin fibers are decreased.  This reduces the

impulses in the thin fibers, thus reducing pain and acupuncture has been

shown to improve this process.

The Nuero-Endocrine Theory has recently

been discovered and has shown that by using acupuncture to stimulate points

along the meridians, results in a release endorphins, which are the body's natural

pain killers.
